Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to identify the relationships between family support, self-esteem and depression in breast cancer survivors.

Methods: This Study is a descriptive correlational design. Data were collected by questionnaires from 180 female patients who visited out patient clinic after mastectomy or partial resection for breast cancer and completing adjuvant treatment such as chemotherapy of radiation therapy at a general hospital and a breast cancer hospital located in an B metropolitan city. The measurements used for this study were Family support scale, Self-esteem scale and Depression scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS/PC WIN 18.0 program with frequency, percentage, mean standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe¡¯ test and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients.

Results: The level of perceived family support was slightly high, the level of self-esteem was moderate and the level of depression was moderate, A moderate negative correlation was found between the level of perceived family support and depression. A strong negative correlation was found between the level of self-esteem and depression.

Conclusion: In conclusion, it was revealed that breast cancer survivors suffered a moderate level of depression. When the levels of perceived family support and self-esteem were high, the level of depression was decreased, Therefore, The nursing intervention programs to improve perceived family support and self-esteem to manage depression is necessary for breast cancer survivors. Especially, the devilment of interventions to promote self-esteem is needed.
